A Fiebel: a brooch made with an integral needle, formed by spiralling the metal to create a spring. Gold hardens when formed and here may not be reheated (annealed) after shaping, else it would lose its tension. This was common in Roman military tunics. Here is another of my treasured brooches! Not only a joy to wear, it took us on a major journey. Inspired by paintings of Gustav Klimt, seen in Vienna, I was wearing it at a function in Taipei and explained the story to a Chinese art dealer. He was planning a retrospective of work by Pan Yu Liang (Yu Lin) in a major Beijing museum and asked if Christine would like to create works derived from these paintings. 3 months later, we were showing the work in China! At a reception by the German Ambassador for Tag der deutschen Einheit, in Wellington. With Alexander Falk, who organised an exhibition around persons now in New Zealand who were impacted by the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The ‘weaving together’ reminds of our Berlin born friend Silke Ziehl, who drove zig-zag along the border, repairing the rift between East and West, following the opening of the borders.
Mexican opal eardrops in 18ct gold and sterling silver. Part of a collection available to view in Wellington next week - 13-15/10 - when we are visiting for a Tag der deutschen Einheit function held by the German Embassy. Waves and pearls. A layered agate, cut with waveforms, set in silver and accompanied by black keshi pearls. On a handknit pebble jumper, also by Christine, The Artist Goldsmith.
Pounamu - Greenstone. The nephrite jade found in New Zealand (and, I am told, Canada) has high value for Māori. This brooch was a gift from David’s father to his wife (D’s mother!) and was passed down. Soft, undulating curves, accentuated by wave forms in gold. Wearing my ‘Roofline’ brooch in 18ct yellow and white gold. With a stone arrowhead from Tirol and a golden pearl, with a tiny diamond. Whilst many contemporary fabrics are too thin for heavy brooches, two layers (shirt and jumper) offer ample support; many compliments received! David.
